While watching your LG TV, do you find half of the screen casting a black or white shadow? If so, your TV is facing a severe hardware/software issue. Solving this LG TV screen problem might not be easier on your own, as the issue has multiple causes. However, if you know the right troubleshooting fixes, then fixing this problem will be much easier.
To help you with that, I have developed a curated guide to get this issue fixed.
Reasons For Your LG TV Showing Half Screen Black
Besides the hardware issues, multiple aspects cause your LG TV to go half-screen black. Some defects that cause your TV to go half-screen black are as follows.
- Issues with HDMI port/cable
- Problem with the broadcasting channel
- Improper picture settings
- LG TV Overheating
- Connectivity problems
Primary Fixes to Solve the LG TV Half Screen Black
To fix the LG TV Half Screen Black problem, I have created two different sets of troubleshooting: Primary and Secondary. So, try out both sections from the following to get your issue sorted.
Change Picture Settings on LG TV
When your LG TV picture settings are improper, you may see an irregular picture on your TV. This includes half screen black. So go to the picture settings and calibrate your LG TV picture settings. You can change the picture mode, gamma ratio, sharpness, and more on your TV. Also, perform an AV reset on your LG TV to fix this issue. To perform an AV reset,
- Press the Mute button thrice or hold it on your webOS remote.
- Once doing that, your TV will show a pop-up with a list of options.
- In there, choose the AV Reset option and click on it.
Check the Power Cable on the LG TV
You may face this issue when your LG TV receives low power. In that case, check whether the power cable/socket is working well and supplying enough power to the TV.
So, try using another power socket at home or replacing the power cable of your TV. Once you have done this, check whether your issue is solved.
Reconnect HDMI Cables on Your TV
If you see a half black screen on your LG TV when loading your streaming devices, check the HDMI cable. You will see this display issue when your HDMI cable is damaged or partially connected to the TV. So first, clean the HDMI port and the respective cable before connecting. If that doesn’t suffice, then replace your HDMI cable and check if the issue is sorted.
If both fixes haven’t helped you fix the issue, the problem is with your TV’s HDMI port. You can have a technician fix it or contact LG customer service to have the HDMI issue fixed.
Check for Backlight Issues on Your TV
The backlight is a key component of TVs that display pictures. If there is an issue with the LG TV backlight, you may face various problems, such as a black screen, dim display, and more. So, as the best fix, replace the backlight strips of your LG TV with the help of a technician or on your own.
Once the backlight strips are replaced, check whether the LG TV half-black screen problem has been resolved.
Replace the T-Con Board on the LG TV
If the above solution doesn’t solve your issue, the problem might be with your TV hardware. You may find this issue when the T-con board or circuits on your TV are burned out.
If you have the technical skill, pry open the panel of your TV and inspect the T-con board. If you find loose connections between the components or worn-out circuits, replace them to fix the problem.
Secondary Fixes to Solve LG TV Half Screen Black
If you like to try every fix before investing in hardware fixes, then try these secondary fixes. With half the screen on the display, you can’t see any menus on your TV to perform the software fixes. However, if your LG smart TV is showing a half-black screen on the right side or at the bottom part of the screen, then try out these fixes on your TV.
Restart Your LG TV
In some cases, your LG TV might show a half black screen due to an internal software bug. To clear up any bugs and make the TV function smoother, simply restart your LG TV. When a restart takes place, you can easily remove unnecessary bugs and errors on the TV to get rid of any issues.
Issues With Broadcaster
If you see a black screen covering half of your LG TV screen while changing the channel, then the problem is with your broadcaster. When the signals are weak, you may face this issue. So, to fix this, either troubleshoot your internet or fix the alignment and connect the Antenna to the LG TV again.
LG TV Overheating
When your LG TV constantly runs for hours, it may get overheated and find it hard to work further. In that case, it will fail to maintain functionality and show errors. To address this issue, try cooling down your LG TV and prevent it from overheating. To make the process easier, keep your LG TV in a well-ventilated space near the air conditioner or fans to cool down your TV.
Update Your LG TV
The next step to fixing your TV’s display problem is to update your LG TV. When the TV is outdated, you will find various problems with it, including the display. So go to the TV settings and look for any updates available for your TV. If an update is available, upgrade your TV firmware to the latest version and check whether the LG smart TV showing half black screen issue is solved or not.
Take a Picture Test on LG TV
If you’re fed up trying different fixes to solve the issue, then simply take a picture test on LG TV. By taking a picture test, you can find out the main cause of the display issue and can come up with a counter-fix for your issue. To take a picture test on your LG TV,
- If you’re an LG webOS 6.0 user, go to All Settings and choose the Support tab from the pop-up. You will now see the Screen Self-Diagnosis option. Click on it and tap Yes as a follow-up.
- For LG webOS 4.0 users, go to Settings and select the All Settings option on your TV. Now, go click on the Support tab on the left and select Additional Settings. In the next step, click on Picture Test. Tap Yes to take the test and figure out the problem on your TV.
